As with many sons, Eric idolized his father. His father, when he wasn’t driving lead engine at Hayward Fire Department Station 1, had a passion for designing and building creative landscapes. From his earliest years, Eric followed in this shared devotion.
It ended up being a lifelong dream fulfilled for my brother.
Vegetable garden ‘expert’ at 12, designing and planting our backyard with abundant results far beyond our ability to enjoy. Our neighbors reaped the surplus benefits happily. Eric’s own Landscape Operations team member tenure was brief but long enough to leave an indelible mark on this soon-to-be ‘decades long’, master estimator and successful family business CFO.
Eric designed and personally supervised the construction of his dream garden at his Martinez home. His joy was to sit in his garden, listen to the water moving through his fountain and pool, and feed his beloved wild birds. Heartfelt thanks to McGuire and Hester for providing my brother with ‘fertile ground’ and ‘abundant support’ to practice his beloved art with the knowledge that he was respected, admired, and valued by his coworkers.

I asked Karl if he would be able to give me a little history about Eric before he joined McGuire and Hester that I could add to the Voyager memorial. What I got from Karl was perfect the way he’d written it, so it stands with no changes. I would, however, like to add that he was a sweet man with a ridiculous work ethic and he will be sorely missed by everyone.
