HR: Cristo Re De La Salle High School Work Study Program

Human Resources has had a productive quarter 3. Our focus has been on everything from attending job fairs, coordinating interviews, processing new hires, assisting employees with benefits, and much more. One of the highlights of this past quarter was launching the student work program (championed by Exec VP of Operations Kevin Hester) with Cristo Rey De La Salle for the 2022-2023 school year through their work-study program.  Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School is one of 37 Cristo Rey Network schools operating across the country. It features a college preparatory personalized education combined with a robust corporate work-study program. Students at Cristo Rey schools work in job-sharing teams of four. Each student works five full days a month, during business hours, Monday through Friday. Academic schedules are structured so that students work without missing any classes.

The school, located within the Diocese of Oakland, is housed on the former Saint Elizabeth High School campus in the Fruitvale District.  Every Cristo Rey student takes a full course load of college preparatory coursework for four years while participating one day each week in a four-year Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) to fund the majority of tuition costs.

This is the first time that our family of companies has been part of this program.  The program started in late August and ends in May of 2023.  We were assigned four students:  Alonzo Moncada – Senior, Santos Callejas – Junior, Josh Ramirez – Sophomore, and Kim Guzman – Freshman.

The students will acquire the skills necessary to be successful in the workplace.  Through this partnership, students get real-world work experience while getting their high school academic work done. Before we even get the students, the school gets them ready by participating in a 1-month long training program consisting of technical (Google, writing conventions, note-taking, etc.), intra/interpersonal soft skills (customer service, communication, public speaking, professionalism, etc.) and learn about the confidentiality of information.

Introducing Our Students!

Alonzo Moncada is working in Accounting and is in the process of applying to college.  He is working on reviewing statements and calling vendors for invoice copies.

Santos Callejas is working in HR filing, scanning, and auditing processes in place.

Josh Ramirez is working at the Railroad yard, assisting in inputting invoices to work orders in Equipment 360 and helping Marketing do some inventory and stocking in the marketing area.

Kim is working at CF/CF&T. Kim helps organize paper files from storage units, scan invoices, and create backup electronic files.

Giving back to the community is one of our core values, and when community service and business come together, everyone benefits.
