Setting Sail: John Ebey’s Journey Into Model Yacht Racing

At McGuire and Hester, we’re proud to showcase the unique hobbies and passions of our team members. This newsletter, we’re shining a spotlight on Senior Estimator John Ebey, whose journey into the intricate and competitive world of model yacht racing is as inspiring as it is fascinating.

Discovering a Passion

John’s introduction to model yacht racing began by chance about 15 years ago. While walking his dogs near his home, he stumbled upon a local event that immediately caught his attention. The sight of the sleek, wind-powered yachts gliding across the water intrigued him. After chatting with a few participants, John decided to dive into the hobby himself. “I remember thinking it was way cool,” he shares. That chance encounter would set the course for an incredible journey.

From Models to Mastery

With a lifelong interest in robotics, model building, and radio-controlled vehicles, model yacht racing felt like a natural progression for John. The technical challenges of building and refining these intricate vessels captivated him. While some enthusiasts design and build their yachts from scratch, John prefers a hybrid approach—assembling boats from components and partial kits, and crafting specific parts himself. This blend of creativity and precision is where his skills truly shine.

“I enjoy researching construction methods and materials to improve the performance of my boats,” he explains. Even minor enhancements can make a significant impact, with a 1-3% increase in speed often determining race outcomes. John’s dedication to optimization reflects his competitive spirit and his passion for continuous improvement.

Competing on the World Stage

Over the years, John has made waves in the model yacht racing scene, competing in events ranging from local regattas to international championships.

Some of his standout achievements include:

  • Winning a craftsmanship award at a regatta in Monterey in 2010, akin to a “Best in Show” accolade.
  • Representing the USA internationally as the No. 1 ranked US skipper at European and World Championship regattas in Spain, France, and the United States.
  • Securing a National Championship in 2012 and multiple Regional Championships over the years.

For John, the 2016 European Championships in Bilbao, Spain, remains his most memorable event. “Meeting people from all over the globe and hanging out in northern Spain’s beautiful Basque country was super fun,” he recalls. Immersing himself in the Basque culture, distinct from traditional Spanish culture, was an unforgettable experience.

The Joy of Racing

When asked what keeps him coming back to the water, John emphasizes the constant learning and strategic aspects of the sport. “What’s fun about racing is developing a strategy to get around the racecourse as fast as possible, then employing tactics to make it happen,” he explains. “Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but you are always learning and putting that knowledge to use.”

Beyond the technical side, John values the camaraderie and teamwork within the racing community. “Understanding the objective, developing a plan, implementing it, and reviewing the results—these skills are invaluable both on and off the water.”

Humor and Unexpected Adventures

Model yacht racing has also brought its share of humorous and surprising moments. John recounts a particularly funny incident at Lake Ray Hubbard in Dallas, Texas, where a competitor from Barbados walked straight off the end of the dock while intensely focused on the race. “He was super focused, then he was super wet,” John laughs.

Another unexpected memory occurred during a road trip back from a race in Hood River, Oregon. John and a friend drove three hours in the wrong direction before realizing that the Pacific Ocean was supposed to be on their right, not their left. “It’s moments like these that make the journey as memorable as the destination,” he adds.

Anchored in Passion

John’s journey in model yacht racing is a testament to the power of curiosity, dedication, and the joy of learning. Whether it’s crafting the perfect yacht component, competing on the global stage, or sharing a laugh with fellow racers, he exemplifies how hobbies can enrich our lives in countless ways.

As he continues to refine his craft and set his sights on new challenges, John’s story reminds us of the rewards of pursuing our passions with enthusiasm and precision. Here’s to many more races and adventures ahead for John Ebey!
