Sunrise Blvd Rehabilitation Phase 2 Recognized with APWA Project of the Year Award

McGuire and Hester is proud to announce that the Sunrise Blvd Rehabilitation Phase 2 project has been named the 2025 Project of the Year in the Transportation category by the Sacramento Chapter of the American Public Works Association. This recognition follows our recent award for the Dixieanne Neighborhood Clean and Green Alleys project, marking the second APWA honor earned by McGuire and Hester this year and underscoring our continued commitment to community-focused infrastructure and construction excellence.

In partnership with the City of Rancho Cordova and Bennett Engineering Services, the project is transforming more than three miles of Sunrise Boulevard into a safer, more efficient, and more attractive corridor. The scope includes new storm drainage, extensive curb and gutter work, upgraded irrigation and landscaping in the center median, and full-depth roadway rehabilitation using cold in-place recycled asphalt topped with nearly 10,000 tons of rubberized asphalt.

McGuire and Hester’s field team has successfully navigated a compressed 120-working-day schedule, significant utility coordination, and high-traffic conditions. The team proposed and secured approval for permanent median closures to extend working hours and improve safety. Early identification and resolution of survey alignment discrepancies, coordinated efforts to reroute water and signal systems, and a custom cold-weather paving solution helped maintain production without delay.

Serving as a main thoroughfare for regional commuters and local businesses, the corridor had long suffered from deteriorated pavement and low median visibility. This rehabilitation improves not only the road’s performance but also its safety and visual character. Enhanced coordination with the City also helped minimize public disruption during construction.

The Sunrise Blvd Rehabilitation Phase 2 project reflects the value McGuire and Hester brings to high-impact public works through partnership, innovation, and precision. It stands as a successful model for infrastructure improvement that benefits both the community and the greater Sacramento region.
