At this year’s UCON Cornhole Tournament, McGuire and Hester intern Fermin Ramos was awarded the D.W. Young Memorial Scholarship, a recognition that reflects both his hard work and the promise he brings to the construction industry. Andy Vasconi, our Concrete Division Manager, was proud to present the award, marking a meaningful moment for Fermin, our team, and the greater construction community.
The scholarship is named in honor of Dave Young, a long-time leader in the industry who was known for mentoring others and helping build careers, not just projects. Dave Young was also Bruce Daseking’s brother-in-law and spent 17 years working at his company, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and commitment. This annual award supports individuals entering construction-related fields who show strong potential and a clear passion for the work, something Fermin has demonstrated throughout his internship.
Since joining McGuire and Hester where he first got his start as a high school marketing intern; Fermin has continued to grow in his role as a now Take-off Intern, approaching every task with curiosity, dedication, and a strong willingness to learn. This scholarship not only supports his continued education, but also recognizes the kind of future leader we’re proud to invest in. As he heads off to Santa Clara University, we’re excited to see all he will accomplish next.
Moments like this reflect the values we live every day: creating opportunities, investing in our people, and honoring the integrity of the individuals who laid the groundwork before us. We’re excited to see what’s ahead for Fermin and grateful to UCON and the D.W. Young Scholarship Committee for continuing to champion the next generation in construction. Congrats Fermin!
