McGuire and Hester completed a comprehensive, multi-phase improvement project at Westborough Middle School in South San Francisco, enhancing accessibility, athletic facilities, drainage, paving, and overall campus functionality.
The project included new concrete flatwork, structural staircases, and switchback ramps to improve accessible routes between the upper-level playing courts and lower athletic field. The existing natural grass field was also replaced with synthetic turf, alongside new paving, fencing, storm drainage infrastructure, and selective landscape improvements.
Improving Access and Play
A major focus of the project was creating better connections throughout the campus. New accessible concrete routes, structural staircases, and switchback ramps now connect the upper-level playing courts with the lower athletic field.
At the field, new synthetic turf provides students with a durable, refreshed space for recreation and school activities. Our crews also completed asphalt paving using GPS-guided equipment to achieve a precise finished surface.
Navigating a Complex Schedule
Delivering improvements across multiple areas of an active school campus required careful planning and coordination. The project was divided into sequential phases with critical milestone dates and several scopes dependent on preceding work.
Our team coordinated activities across trades to maintain progress and keep each phase moving toward completion.
Solving Challenges Below the Surface
During construction, unforeseen conditions were discovered within the school’s existing storm drainage infrastructure. Drawing on McGuire and Hester’s underground utility experience and self-perform capabilities, our team located and diagnosed damaged portions of the system and completed the necessary repairs.
The improvements strengthen the reliability of the campus stormwater system while helping support long-term campus operations.
