Behind the Controls: Interns Lead the Way at the 2025 Equipment Rodeo

At McGuire and Hester, we don’t just build infrastructure. We build people. On July 18, our team came together to celebrate the bright, driven interns who have spent their summer learning, contributing, and embodying the spirit of employee ownership.

The day kicked off with a welcome breakfast, setting the tone with good food, warm smiles, and a strong sense of community. It was a chance for interns to connect with mentors, leaders, and each other, reinforcing the people-first culture that defines McGuire and Hester.

Next up was a hands-on safety orientation led by Safety Manager Wes Murer. The session was supported by the entire safety team including Wes, Gustavo, and Brandon. Interns received a direct look at how we prioritize safety across all operations. It served as a reminder that at McGuire and Hester, safety is not a checklist. It is a culture. Interns learned firsthand the practices and mindset that ensure every team member goes home safe each day.

From there, the hands-on learning continued with the Equipment Rodeo. Interns had the opportunity to try their hand at operating real heavy equipment, including mini excavators and backhoes. With guidance from experienced team members, they explored the mechanics of the machines and gained a deeper appreciation for the craft. The energy was high, the atmosphere was supportive, and the experience offered a memorable glimpse into the work we do every day.

After working up an appetite, the team enjoyed a well-earned taco luncheon, complete with flavorful plates, cold drinks, and plenty of shade. The meal offered a chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy great conversation.

Energized and refreshed, the group transitioned into one of the day’s most anticipated activities: bocce ball.

What began as a relaxed game quickly evolved into a competitive highlight. Teams brought their best effort, mixing friendly banter with focused throws and enthusiastic support from the sidelines. Each match showcased quick thinking, strong communication, and some impressive clutch plays.

In the end, Bruce’s team featuring Bruce, Courtney, Isaac, and Aaron earned the win. Their accuracy, steady teamwork, and confident play carried them to the top. Close behind was Luke’s team, claiming second place with a strong showing and great spirit. Luke was joined by Neal, John, and Matt, making it a memorable match right to the finish.

The day wrapped with the final showdown, the Intern Competition. This year’s challenge tested both focus and finesse as interns faced off to see who could use the mini excavator to place two balls into two separate bins in the shortest amount of time. Precision, patience, and a steady hand were key as the crowd looked on and cheered for every scoop, swing, and drop.

Congratulations to Kolby Soule, this year’s winner. Kolby completed the course with speed and control, securing the top spot in a challenge that brought the entire day’s learning full circle.

To our interns, thank you for bringing your energy, ideas, and enthusiasm to McGuire and Hester this summer. You are part of our legacy now, and we cannot wait to see where you go from here.
